3.17.13 The Prayer of Saint Patrick

I arise today

Through God’s strength to pilot me;

God’s might to uphold me,

God’s wisdom to guide me,

God’s eye to look before me,

God’s ear to hear me,

God’s word to speak for me,

God’s hand to guard me,

God’s way to lie before me,

God’s shield to protect me,

God’s hosts to save me

From snares of the devil,

From temptations of vices,

From every one who desires me ill,

Afar and anear,

Alone or in a multitude.

Recovering reliable historical information about many of the saints is difficult if not impossible, and Saint Patrick (c. 390–461) is no exception. Born in Scotland, Patrick was imprisoned and taken to Ireland when he was about sixteen years old. He retuned to Scotland, only to have a dream in which the people of Ireland called out to him, “we beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once again.” He did return, and although the details are obscure and the legends are large, he wandered and ministered in Ireland for over thirty years, converting the nation.

3.17.13 … a late afternoon walk after an all afternoon nap …

“Solvitur Ambulando” – It is solved by walking, 2013 Lenten labyrinth walks, Myers Park Baptist Church – Charlotte NC:

Today’s walk was a late afternoon walk after an all afternoon nap, following an almost  all nighter…

It’s 6 PM and about 60°, and there is a light breeze. After yesterday, it seems much cooler and much more early spring.
I hear lots and lots of birds chirping and see them flying around. I can also see the trees beginning to bud and excited about it.

3.15.13 – 3.17.13 … Happy St. Patrick’s Day … Do not be afraid … When pigs fly …

FPC PW Retreat

Friday
Icebreakers: random penny … what significant happened in year on penny?
Mine was 1969 … I was 9  and on July 20, 1969 …
one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
General overview of parables and yes, Jesus is the only one to use parables in the Bible
Saturday
Bugles calling us to breakfast
Breakfast much better than that most conference centers, including Montreat 🙂
Morning session:
first off music was great … thanks, Beth Williams
Love the refrain in hymn “For Everyone Born, A Place at the Table”
“and God will celebrate when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace:: yes, God will celebrate when  we are creators of justice, justice and joy !
At the morning session, Mary Margaret Porter led our retreat study in the Parable of the Talents.
Our group which consisted of Linda, Katherine, Ann and myself definitely went off road and decided that the nobleman was not God as everyone else decided, but the World. We also decided that the servants/slaves were people who did not speak up and that the subjects of the nobleman (who spoke up and were later killed) were followers of the Lord and choose not to live in the world or under the authority of the world.
Lunch bugle …
Lunch also much better than that served at most conference centers.
After lunch, a quick visit to the gift shop where they had several of the “and also with y’all” T-shirts. I had to explain it to a Presbyterian and a non-Southerner. 🙂
Evening Session
Surely God is in this place,  Holy Ground
Social time til 2 am … Enough said.
Sunday
Morning was rough
Breakfast bugle …
Worship in the Chapel … very nice service.  I did feel strange saying “debts/debtors” in an Episcopal Chapel …
Katherine used the Lecto Divina method (reading scripture 3 x) and allowing the participants to make reflections out loud. We studied Isaiah 43:

Isaiah 43

Israel’s Only Savior

43 But now, this is what the Lord says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I give Egypt for your ransom,
Cush[a] and Seba in your stead.
Since you are precious and honored in my sight,
and because I love you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
I will bring your children from the east
and gather you from the west.
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring my sons from afar
and my daughters from the ends of the earth—
everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.”

And finally … Driving back from Kanuga,  it was  absolutely gorgeous .., we stopped by Bridges’ Barbecue.  Very good!
