6.10.13 … “They felt their churches offered superficial answers to life’s difficult questions” …

atheists, Christianity, New Atheism, college culture, The Atlantic, Next Church, worth reading: I highlighted this The Atlantic article yesterday … 6.9.13 … “Sincerity does not trump truth. After all, one can be sincerely wrong. But sincerity is indispensable to any truth we wish others to believe. “ This Next Church summary is very helpful (the article is long).

Next Church

Fascinating listening project with college-aged atheists. – Larry Alex Taunton – The Atlantic

The article is really long, but the learnings from the listening project are informative as we grapple with the number of teens/young adults leaving Christianity:

1. They had attended church.

2. The mission and message of their churches was vague.

3. They felt their churches offered superficial answers to life’s difficult questions.

4. They expressed respect for ministers who took Bible seriously.

5. Ages 14-17 were decisive.

6. The decision to embrace unbelief was an emotional one.

7. The internet factored heavily into their conversion to atheism.
