7.8.13 … Primeval Underwater Forest in Gulf of Mexico … Google Doodle: Roswell UFO …

Primeval Underwater Forest, Alabama, Gulf of Mexico: 50,000 years … when cut, they still smell like fresh Cypress sap.

Scuba divers have discovered a primeval underwater forest off the coast of Alabama.

The Bald Cypress forest was buried under ocean sediments, protected in an oxygen-free environment for more than 50,000 years, but was likely uncovered by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, said Ben Raines, one of the first divers to explore the underwater forest and the executive director of the nonprofit Weeks Bay Foundation, which researches estuaries.

The forest contains trees so well-preserved that when they are cut, they still smell like fresh Cypress sap, Raines said.

Google is no stranger to interactive doodles. For the London 2012 Olympics, the company let users control a virtual runner jumping over hurdles. On Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary, the company transformed its iconic logo into playable version of the arcade game.

Today’s doodle is one of Google’s most engaging yet, casting the player as a Roswell alien recovering the missing parts of its flying saucer. Along the way, it allows you to explore a farm in Roswell, feed chickens and grow a magic bean stalk. For those who are stuck, several Youtube users have posted videos on how to beat the game.

Regardless of whether you believe the government is covering up its first encounter with extraterrestrial intelligence or that the conspiracy theorists are completely off their rockers, there’s one thing most everyone can agree on: The Roswell doodle is a fun way to kill a few minutes of the workday.

Google’s latest front-page Doodle may be its most ambitious yet — a fully-fledged point-and-click adventure game in which you play an alien attempting to gather items to get its grounded flying saucer back into space. The occasion? It’s the 66th anniversary of the Roswell incident, where an unidentified object crashed on a New Mexico ranch and gave rise to countless alien conspiracy theories. The Doodle game is rolling out across various timezones;
