6.11.13 … Citi Bikes: “technical errors of a magnitude never experienced by bike-share programs in other major American cities” …

Citi Bikes, bike-share, errors,  NYTimes.com:  As you probably know, I love bike share programs … I would use them in NYC, but only on weekends or in low traffic times and areas.  I cannot understand why this program is getting the vitriole it is.

Judged by the numbers, New York City’s fledgling bike-share program might be viewed as a rousing success.

After two weeks, more than 170,000 trips have been taken. Annual memberships have exceeded 36,000. No serious injuries have been reported.

But the Bloomberg administration has refused to quantify, or even elaborate on, the rash of problems plaguing its system, which has suffered technical errors of a magnitude never experienced by bike-share programs in other major American cities.

I’ve always wondered how exactly to describe the temperament, the broadmindedness, the analytical subtlety, the that through the decades have shaped the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page. Conveniently, the Journal has filled that need, via this video interview with one of its editorial board members. Henceforth when you read the Journal’s editorials, I invite you to hear this voice, expression, and tone.

5.31.13 … Marcellus Hall’s ‘Urban Cycles’: “I’ve only been ‘doored’ twice” …

Marcellus Hall’s ‘Urban Cycles’, The New Yorker, Citi Bikes:  “I’ve only been ‘doored’ twice” … wow, I’ve never been “doored.”

“I’ve only been ‘doored’ twice,” says Marcellus Hall, the artist who penned this week’s cover, “Urban Cycles.” Hall goes on to explain how he’s managed to survive for fifteen years as a cyclist in the city: “I’m very careful. I look into the side mirrors of the parked cars to see if there’s movement inside. I ride only on the left side of the street because there’s less of chance of a passenger getting out than of a driver. Actually, I read it in some cyclist publication that, as a cyclist, you’re allowed to take up a whole lane and sometimes, I even do that—though it’s a risky proposition. I’m not one of those hard-core bike freaks; it’s just a good way for me to get around in the city.”
