9.25.13 … Doug Band, who?? …

Doug Band, President Bill Clinton, Clinton dynasty, New Republic:  For a liberal magazine, this is scathing article on both Doug Band and Bill Clinton: How Doug Band drove a wedge through the Clinton dynasty | New Republic.

Bill Clinton now leads a sprawling  philanthropic empire like no other. The good it achieves is undeniable. It has formed partnerships with multinationals and wealthy individuals to distribute billions of dollars all over the globe. Its many innovative projects include efforts to lower the costs of medicines in developing nations and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in major cities. And yet it’s hard to shake the sense that it’s not all about saving the world. There’s an undertow of transactionalism in the glittering annual dinners, the fixation on celebrity, and a certain contingent of donors whose charitable contributions and business interests occupy an uncomfortable proximity. More than anyone else except Clinton himself, Band is responsible for creating this culture. And not only did he create it; he has thrived in it.

9.25.13 … then I walk out and start my life again …

Atlanta,  labyrinths,  A circular journey into one’s soul,  Ben Smith, SaportaReport:  This is a great article about labyrinths and gives me some words to explain my walking in circles to others.  Thanks, Ben Smith, author of the blogpost, and Linda Claire Snyder and John Rhodes, Atlanta leaders in the movement.

The emblem of a winding path bound by a circle caught the attention of the convenience store clerk. “It’s a maze,” she said, smiling and pointing at my T-shirt.

“No, it’s actually a labyrinth,” I replied. “It’s sort of like a maze.”

“What’s the difference?” she asked.

I paused. How could I explain the power of what looked to others like walking in circles? How could I sum up my spiritual and meditative exercise for more than a decade?

9.25.13 … the Fallen …

Arromanches beach, Normandy, Peace Day, public art, the Fallen: Last Saturday was Peace Day (International Day of Peace (United Nations) 2013). I was overwhelmed by “the Fallen,” a very temporary public art installation.

A pair of British artists have created this stunning installation of 9,000 silhouettes on a D-Day Landings beach to mark international Peace Day.

The project, named, ‘The Fallen’ is a tribute to the civilians, German forces and Allies who lost their lives during the Operation Neptune landing on June 6, 1944.

The design was the brainchild of Jamie Wardley, 33, and Andy Moss, 50.

Together with a team of volunteers the pair travelled to Arromanches beach, Normandy, to create the silhouettes, which were individually drawn into the sand.
