9.29.13 … George H.W. Bush, same-sex marriage, atheism, closets, logs, specks … nice socks …

Former President George H.W. Bush,same-sex marriage, Maine: So what was his public statements on this in the past?

Another prominent Republican has come out in support of same-sex marriage — or at least, in support of one particular same-sex marriage.

Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara served as an official witnesses Saturday at the Maine wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, co-owners of a Kennebunk general store. Thorgalsen posted a photo on Facebook of the 41st commander-in-chief signing a set of documents for them at an outdoor celebration: “Getting our marriage license witnessed!”

George W. Bush, earlier this year, said that he “shouldn’t be taking a speck out of someone else’s eye when I have a log in my own,” in response to a question about the conflict between Christian values and gay marriage, while H.W.’s granddaughter Barbara has openly supported gay marriage.

Bill Maher, Atheism The New Gay Marriage’, Nonbelievers,  ‘Out Of The Closet’:  I just thought this interesting …

There are no admitted atheists serving in Congress, and in a recent interview, comedian Bill Maher said that while he wouldn’t be the one to break that trend, the tide was shifting in the favor of nonbelievers.

“[Atheists are] out there, they’re thinking it, they’re just afraid to say it,” Maher said during an interview with TheWrap. “But that’s changing. It’ll be the new gay marriage.”

Maher’s remark came in response to a question about whether he would ever consider seeking office. He called himself the “the last person who could ever win,” citing his lack of faith as just one reason. Maher is a vocal atheist, and in 2008 he starred in “Religulous,” a film that poked fun at a variety of organized religions and their beliefs.

Maher went on to point out that the number of Americans who say they don’t believe in God has increased, while congressional representation has only fallen, from one admitted atheist — Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), who lost in 2012 — to zero. But Maher said he had hope for the future as more and more people “came out of the closet” as atheists.
